Feasibility Study: Utilizing National Energy Resources for Bitcoin Mining to Increase U.S. Bitcoin Reserves under the Trump Administration

Image
1. Current Situation: Bitcoin Reserves and Trump’s Energy Policy Amid intensifying global competition for Bitcoin reserves, the U.S. government has accumulated approximately 200,000 Bitcoins (worth around $17 billion) through law enforcement seizures and has established a “strategic Bitcoin reserve pool” prohibiting their sale. Meanwhile, the Trump administration’s policy direction exhibits two core tendencies: (1) supporting traditional energy industries, advocating for reduced subsidies and constraints on clean energy; (2) enhancing America’s financial competitiveness without increasing fiscal expenditure. Therefore, utilizing national energy resources for Bitcoin mining to augment reserves theoretically aligns with the administration’s policy objectives. Currently, U.S. national energy assets primarily include decommissioned power plants, Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) hydroelectric facilities, military backup power sources, and other public energy infrastructures. These resources...

Swan Bitcoin lawsuit targets former executives, implicates Tether

Image
Swan Bitcoin has filed a lawsuit against Proton Management, a bitcoin mining firm made up of former Swan consultants, claiming that these executives “hatched and executed a ‘rain and hellfire’ plan to steal Swan’s” mining business.  Specifically, the suit alleges that several consultants who were a part of Swan’s Bitcoin mining operation allegedly planned to misappropriate Swan’s intellectual property to operate a “copycat company” that was also funded by Tether. The lawsuit includes an email that appears to show a discussion about how best to execute the exit and says, “Tether needs to send default notice.” Screenshot from the lawsuit . The Timeline According to the lawsuit, in June 2023, Swan Bitcoin CEO Cory Klippsten learned of a bitcoin mine in Australia that was trying to raise funding. He apparently discussed this opportunity with Giancarlo Devasini, the CFO of both Bitfinex and Tether, and the two agreed to ...

Bitcoin Mining: Energy Consumption and Environmental Impact

Bitcoin Mining: Energy Consumption and Environmental Impact! Bitcoin, the first and most widely recognized cryptocurrency, has become synonymous with the concept of decentralized finance. However, one of the most significant controversies surrounding Bitcoin is its environmental impact, particularly its energy consumption. As Bitcoin mining continues to grow, understanding its effects on the environment becomes increasingly important. This article explores the energy demands of Bitcoin mining, its environmental consequences, and potential solutions to mitigate its impact. Understanding Bitcoin Mining Bitcoin mining is the process through which new bitcoins are created and transactions are verified and added to the blockchain. This process involves solving complex mathematical problems, requiring substantial computational power. The miners who successfully solve these problems are rewarded with newly minted bitcoins and transaction fees. As the number of miners increases, the difficulty...

Luxor refutes claims its Bitcoin hashrate-backed product is BlockFi, Celsius 2.0

“The return comes from hashrate, not from pixie dust, ponzi schemes, or rehypothecation,” a Luxor Technology executive stressed. An upcoming Bitcoin (BTC) hashrate-backed product that could offer 10% to 13% returns shouldn’t be compared to failed products by BlockFi or Celsius as its returns come from proof-of-work, not “ponzi schemes,” claims the product’s creator Bitcoin mining firm Luxor Technology. The legitimacy of Luxor’s hashrate-backed product was highlighted in an Oct. 17 What Bitcoin Did podcast. Host Peter McCormack expressed concern at Luxor's upcoming offering and discussed what a worst-case-scenario for Luxor’s product would look like. Luxor’s Head of Derivatives Matt Williams told Cointelegraph that its hashrate-backed product isn’t a repeat of products from BlockFi or Celsius because it's backed by economic production. “There is actual proof-of-work and demonstrable economic activity happening [here].” Williams said. “The return comes from miners giving up some...

Wen moon? Bitcoin halving cycle hints at Q4 as smart money 'buys the rumor'

Image
Bitcoin miners and "smart money" are the investor cohorts to watch when it comes to late 2023 BTC price action, says Filbfilb. Bitcoin (BTC) is “much more likely” to stay rangebound until at least Q4, 2023, according to longtime market participant Filbfilb. In an X thread on Aug. 25, the popular analyst and co-founder of trading suite Decentrader told readers to expect flat BTC price action into year end. Filbfilb: BTC price approaching "critical time" Bitcoin may be disappointing bulls after its 70% Q1 gains, but for Filbfilb, there is little about BTC price action this halving cycle that is different to its previous ones. “Bitcoin is 1200 days since the previous halving. During this period, Bitcoin has historically consolidated,” he explained. Uploading various comparative charts, Filbfilb predicted that miners should begin to bid price higher into the Bitcoin halving — with this occurring around 1,276 days after each prior halving . “Miners are incentivized to ...

Mining 1 BTC in Lebanon is 783x cheaper than Italy: CoinGecko

Image
According to the report, Europe is home to nine out of the ten least profitable countries for Bitcoin production, determined by household electricity costs. There is a significant worldwide contrast in household electricity expenses for individual Bitcoin (BTC) miners. While producing one Bitcoin in Italy costs $208,500, in Lebanon, it’s roughly 783 times cheaper , according to a recent report. Published on Aug. 17, CoinGecko’s report revealed that only 65 countries are profitable for solo Bitcoin miners, based solely on household electricity costs. Among these, 34 countries are in Asia, while Europe only has five.  However, solo Bitcoin miners find themselves at odds with the worldwide average of household electricity costs.  “The average household electricity cost to mine one Bitcoin is $46,291.24, which is 35% higher than the average daily price of 1 BTC in July 2023 ($30,090.08),” the report stated. The report identified Italy as the costliest country for household Bitcoin product...

Bitcoin ETFs to push US slice of crypto ETF trading volume to 99.5% — Analyst

Image
Approval of spot Bitcoin ETFs in the United States will likely push the country's share of crypto ETF trading volumes even higher, says a Bloomberg analyst. The United States could make up for 99.5% of the global trading volume for crypto -related exchange-traded funds (ETF) — but only if spot Bitcoin ETFs are approved, according to a Bloomberg ETF analyst. Currently, North America accounts for 97.7% of all crypto ETF trading volume, Bloomberg senior ETF analyst Eric Balchunas revealed in an Aug. 10 X (Twitter) post. “If/when spot ETFs come out in the U.S. this will likely go to like 99.5%,” he speculated. Bitcoin hash rate taps new milestone with miner hodling at 1-year low

Image
Bitcoin miners' BTC reserves are at their lowest since December 2021, data shows, despite a dramatic hash rate renaissance. Bitcoin (BTC) is seeing new records in network activity as volatility sends BTC price action to fresh five-month highs. Data from resources including MiningPoolStats confirms that Bitcoin’s Hash Rate hit new all-time highs on Jan. 26. Hash rate passes 300 EH/s threshold In another example of Bitcoin’s blitz recovery from the pits of post-FTX woes, network hashing power is now bigger than ever. Hash rate, which is an expression of the processing power dedicated to the network by miners, is currently at 321 exahashes per second (EH/s), according to MiningPoolStats raw data. Bitcoin hash rate raw data chart (screenshot). Source: MiningPoolStats Despite being only an estimate and not possible to measure entirely accurately, the latest readings are quite the feat, having never crossed the 300 EH/s level before. Mining firm Braiins likewise confirmed the numbers in...
