Bank of America CEO Says Banking Industry Will Embrace Crypto

Image
In what is certainly a monumental development for the asset class, Bank of America CEO Brian Moynihan has said that the banking industry would embrace crypto. Indeed, speaking to CNBC, the executive noted that the industry would only require regulators to permit banks to operate within the growing cryptocurrency market. That appears closer than ever before. With Donald Trump officially inaugurated into office Monday, he brought with him a stark pro-crypto stance. Moreover, his appointment of Mark Uyeda as active chair is poised to redefine the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). Specifically, overhauling its stance on cryptocurrencies. CertiK co-founder Ronghui Gu told Cointelegraph that it’s “inexcusable” the industry faces continued SIM-swap and multisig failures, as previous incidents already highlighted the issues. As companies continue to fall for hacks and exploits, professionals working in the cybersecurity space chipped in on what can be improved in terms of crypto security for digital asset companies and the broader crypto industry.  Before September, almost $1 billion had already been lost to crypto hacks, exploits and scams in 2023. Yet, more incidents continue to shake the crypto world in the fourth quarter of 2023, such as the Poloniex exploit, with over $100 million in digital asset losses, and the HECO Chain bridge hack, with over $80 million in losses. .@Poloniex is suspected to have been hacked. Are Bitcoin ETFs good for adoption or ‘watered-down crypto’? Debate rages

As hype builds for spot Bitcoin ETFs in the U.S., some are concerned the industry is moving away from the “core promise” of cryptocurrencies. CoinList founder Andy Bromberg believes that spot Bitcoin (BTC) exchange-traded funds (ETFs) are just “watered down crypto ” and a sign the industry is heading in the wrong direction, amid growing hype over potential ETF approvals in the United States. Bromberg — also CEO of payments-focused wallet app Beam — told Cointelegraph: “If a Bitcoin ETF is considered crypto, we’ve failed as an industry.” He said a Bitcoin ETF would “absolutely” be a net positive for crypto adoption but asserted the space’s success comes from helping people self-custody assets and decouple from the traditional finance system — the antithesis of a TradFi ETF. “If crypto adoption happens mostly through ETFs and similar centralized financial instruments, then the core promises of the technology won’t be realized — decentralization and true ownership.” The rise of rollups...

Web3 advocate and author Alex Tapscott on the future of blockchain mass adoption

Image
Alex Tapscott says Web3 offers “a set of tools” that can be used to “build new business models, to create new kinds of organizations [and] to transform existing industries.” Web3, blockchain , crypto and mass adoption were major buzzwords in 2021 and 2022, but the public interest in the terms fell to the wayside over the last year as media headlines narrowed their focus to the now defunct FTX exchange and the trial of its founder, Sam Bankman-Fried.  Fast-forward to the present, where media headlines are focused on pending spot Bitcoin exchange-traded fund applications, more than 100% year-to-date price gains for Bitcoin (BTC) and a revival in the nonfungible token (NFT) markets. Perhaps, Web3 is back. On Episode 14 of The Agenda podcast, hosts Ray Salmond and Jonathan DeYoung spoke with Alex Tapscott about his deep views on Web3 and how the tech and ideas backing it will “transform the existing industries.” The blockchain revolution is still happening Revolutions catalyze transforma...

Can blockchain solutions disrupt US inflation forecasting?

Image
New blockchain-based apps like Truflation could be a “healthy development,” given that gauging inflation is more art than science. So much of the world’s economic steam depends on interest rates, which in turn are tied to inflation, i.e., the rate at which producer and consumer prices are rising.  But measuring inflation isn’t easy. It is as much art as it is science. The world’s number one inflation index, arguably, is the United States Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) Consumer Price Index (CPI), which has been around for over 100 years. Not all economists and business leaders are happy with the CPI, however. Its methodology sometimes seems antiquated, and it publishes only once a month. It also relies on a workforce of 477 people who canvas supermarkets, department stores, gas stations and hospitals, often simply jotting down retail prices — not exactly 21st century. “Basically, they go to stores — whether it’s electronically or in person — and write down prices,” Nationwide insuran...

Luxor refutes claims its Bitcoin hashrate-backed product is BlockFi, Celsius 2.0

“The return comes from hashrate, not from pixie dust, ponzi schemes, or rehypothecation,” a Luxor Technology executive stressed. An upcoming Bitcoin (BTC) hashrate-backed product that could offer 10% to 13% returns shouldn’t be compared to failed products by BlockFi or Celsius as its returns come from proof-of-work, not “ponzi schemes,” claims the product’s creator Bitcoin mining firm Luxor Technology. The legitimacy of Luxor’s hashrate-backed product was highlighted in an Oct. 17 What Bitcoin Did podcast. Host Peter McCormack expressed concern at Luxor's upcoming offering and discussed what a worst-case-scenario for Luxor’s product would look like. Luxor’s Head of Derivatives Matt Williams told Cointelegraph that its hashrate-backed product isn’t a repeat of products from BlockFi or Celsius because it's backed by economic production. “There is actual proof-of-work and demonstrable economic activity happening [here].” Williams said. “The return comes from miners giving up some...

Bitcoin price hits all-time highs across Argentina, Nigeria and Turkey

Image
The new all-time highs come despite Bitcoin still being down over 50% against its price peak of $69,000 against the U.S. dollar. The price of Bitcoin (BTC) has notched new all -time highs against some of the world’s most inflationary fiat currencies. Across 30 hours over Oct. 23 to 24, the cost of buying one Bitcoin has reached all time- highs when using the Argentine peso (ARS), Nigerian naira (NGN), Turkish lira (TRY), Laotian kip (LAK) and the Egyptian pound (EGT). #Bitcoin just hit an all-time high in Argentina, Turkey and Nigeria. pic.twitter.com/sKRNUaBMX8 — Miles Deutscher (@milesdeutscher) October 26, 2023 However, it should be noted that the result is due to the ongoing devaluation of the currencies, exacerbated by Bitcoin’s recent 16% price increase. NGN and TRY fell to their lowest points against the U.S. dollar on Oct. 24 and Oct.25, while ARS is only 0.85% off its all-time low (against the U.S. dollar). Google Cloud has teamed up with blockchain infrastructure firm MultiversX (formerly Elrond) to boost its Web 3 presence. Google Cloud has integrated MultiversX into the platform which will in turn help Web3 projects and users derive valuable insights from powerful data analytics and artificial intelligence tools within the Google Cloud ecosystem. MultiversX claims that the partnership between the two firms has the potential to immediately streamline the execution of large-scale, data-first blockchain projects. This should help developers easily access data about addresses, transacted amounts, smart contract interactions, and increased on-chain analytics, the company said. On the other hand, the Google Cloud involvement in the MultiversX network will enable ecosystem builders to utilize advanced tools and services avail...

Bitcoiner drops BitVM paper — bringing Ethereum-like contracts to Bitcoin

The author of the white paper, Robin Linus, based BitVM’s architecture on Ethereum’s optimistic rollups with fraud proofs and recent Merkle tree developments. A Bitcoin developer has proposed a new way to bring more expressive off-chain smart contracts to Bitcoin (BTC) without needing a soft fork. Announced in an Oct.9 white paper titled “BitVM: Compute Anything on Bitcoin” by ZeroSync’s project lead Robin Linus, BitVM enables Turing-complete Bitcoin contracts without altering Bitcoin’s consensus rules. The “logic” of Bitcoin contracts is executed off-chain but is then verified on Bitcoin — similar to Ethereum’s optimistic rollups. BitVM’s architecture is based on fraud proofs and a challenge-response model where a “p...

Saudi Arabia looks to blockchain gaming and Web3 to diversify economy

Image
The kingdom is currently diversifying its economy away from oil and turning to new opportunities, such as gaming and Web3. Saudi Arabia has ramped up its economic diversification efforts driven by its ambitious Vision 2030.  In a bid to diversify its economy away from a dependence on oil, the kingdom has embraced emerging technologies, such as blockchain and artificial intelligence (AI), and tapped into booming markets like gaming. But while the country has yet to leave a significant mark in the global game and AI development, the ripples of its investments in the gaming sector could extend far beyond — at least, that’s what Web3 experts say. “Based on our work and communications that we have, Saudi [Arabia] is very, very interested in Web3,” Animoca Brands co-founder Yat Siu told Cointelegraph. Given the kingdom’s partnerships with entities such as The Sandbox and even Animoca, Siu sees that there’s an effort from Saudi to venture into the new iteration of the internet. The executive...
